St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright suffered an Achilles injury Saturday night and could be out for the year. The Cardinals were quiet after the 5-3 win over the brewers last night. He is going to have an MRI tomorrow and it will be known if he is out for the year.
Jenrry Mejia is suspended 80 games for violating the substance abuse policy for using Stanozolol. The suspension will save the Mets $1.2 million according to the New York Post.
Mejia is the fourth player to test positive for the drug in the last 15 days. Seattle pitcher David Rollins and Braves pitcher Arodys Vizcaino also received suspensions for failing a drug test. The Yankees got their first win last night against the Toronto Blue Jays. Following the opening day loss they didn't want to lose two in a row so the Yankees rallied in the eighth to beat the Yankees 4-3, after Chase Headly's RBI single that gave them the lead.
The Yankees trailed 3-1 then Chris Young got a hit in right field to spark the rally. Jacoby Ellsbury added a single and finished with two hits and two runs. Yankee pitcher Michael Pineda went six innings and six strikeouts. To get the rally going Ellsbury got a hit to center then Toronto pitcher Aaron Loup hit Bret Gardner then threw a wild pitch by Brett Cecil which scored young. Cecil then struck out Carlos Beltran then Brian Mccann to bring the tying run in Ellsbury, then Headly got a base hit to score Gardner to give the Yankees the 4-3 lead and win. The Redsox singed Rick Porcello to a four year $82.5 million dollar extension according to WEEI.com's Alex Speier and will keep the Porcello through the 2019 season.
Porcello hasn't made debut yet after being acquired for Yoenis Cespedes this winter he will pitch alongside Clay Bucholtz, Wade Miley, Justin Masterson, and Joe Kelly. In six seasons with the Tigers he has posted a record of 76-63 and 4.30 ERA in 184 appearances in 180 starts. The San Diego Padres made a big trade Sunday night acquiring closer Craig Kimbrel and outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. From the Braves for outfielder Cameron Maybin and Carlos Quentin, pitcher Matt Wisler outfielder Jordan Paroubeck and the 41st overall pick in the draft in June.
The Padres are a stacked team heading into this season especially after getting Kimbrel he has been posting great numbers since 2010 and he's singed through the 2017 season for $33 million. In 2014 he posted a 1.61 ERA with 13K and 3 walks. Quentin is owed $8 million he hit an average if .315 in 2014. After that a big trade the Padres additions for 2015 are James Shields, Will Myers, Matt Kemp, Justin Upton, Melvin Upton Jr. and Craig Kimbrel, This team is fully loaded and is a threat to any team playing them. The Twins singed Santana to a four year $55 million dollar deal but will be out for half the year now because of this. Santana who is 32 was behind the number 2 starter after right handed starter Phil Hughes and was supposed to pitch on April 13 at Target Field. With Santana out right hander Mike Pelfey will take his place. Santana has a career 4.72 ERA in ten seasons with the Angles, Royals, and Braves. He has made 30 starts in five straight seasons, and seven of last nine. Redsox Manager John Farrell announced today that Clay Bucholtz will get the start on opening day against the Phillies. It will be the first opening day start for Bucholtz in his career. Farrell also said on Sunday that newly acquired pitcher Rick Porcello will pitch the second game of the series.
Farrell said today the reason why Bucholtz will get the start stating that "he came into camp in a good place both mentally and physically". But Bucholtz had a rocky season last year with a record of 8-11 and a 5.34 ERA and he also struggled in his last spring training game giving up 12 hits and four runs in five innings on Friday. With Jon Lester gone Farrell came one could assume that Bucholtz would start opening day but Farrell wanted to see how all the pitchers stood before he made his decision, and according to Farrell " this is Clay's time." Phillies ace Cole Hamel's is wanting to still be traded but the question is who is going to want him? Many teams have inquired on Hamel's over the past few months but he still remains in Philadelphia. The new team to come into play on the Hamel's sweepstakes is the Rangers with the loss of their ace Yu Darvish due to Tommy John Surgery Hamel's to the Rangers could be a good fit.
According to SBnation.com the Hamel's rumor to the Rangers puts the Rangers as the front runner of singing the pitcher. The Redsox were interested in singing him but would need to trade a pitcher worth something which they don't have, the Yankees need pitching help but haven't made that extra push yet to sign Hamel's and the Padres singed James Shields earlier in the off season so they are all set. Which ever team lands Hamel's will get his massive contract which includes $96 million guaranteed money through 2018. He had a 2.46 ERA in 2014 but he finished the season at 9-9. According to mlbtraderumors.com Texas Rangers ace Yu Darvish will undergo Tommy John Surgery next week. The Ranagers announced that Dr. James Andrews will perfom the surgery in Florida and Darvish will miss the entire 2015 season.
Now the question Rangers fans will be asking is who can replace Darvish? GM John Daniels has already said they are looking at a replacement to fit in. They could make a push for Cole Hamels but its not clear that the Phillies are willing to trade Hamels anymore. Darvish is a great pitcher for the Rangers and will be hard to replace his domminance. Darvish has a 2.92 ERA with 11.7K and 3.3 walks in 354 innings. Darvish who is only 28 has proven that he has one of the most dominant arms in the league coming in second in the 2013 AL Cy Young Award. |
