Redsox Manager John Farrell announced today that Clay Bucholtz will get the start on opening day against the Phillies. It will be the first opening day start for Bucholtz in his career. Farrell also said on Sunday that newly acquired pitcher Rick Porcello will pitch the second game of the series.
Farrell said today the reason why Bucholtz will get the start stating that "he came into camp in a good place both mentally and physically". But Bucholtz had a rocky season last year with a record of 8-11 and a 5.34 ERA and he also struggled in his last spring training game giving up 12 hits and four runs in five innings on Friday.
With Jon Lester gone Farrell came one could assume that Bucholtz would start opening day but Farrell wanted to see how all the pitchers stood before he made his decision, and according to Farrell " this is Clay's time."
